Work has been very busy lately, plus I'll be starting a part-time job soon (crazy, I know!) so not much time for posting these days, but....5 things to be happy about.

1. Some fun events this week! Gauguin at SAM, Oklahoma at The 5th, and dancing at Soul Nite this weekend.

2. Taking a nap during the Super Bowl. I hear I didn't miss much.

3. Frequently laughing out loud at comments on Apartment Therapy posts.

4. Working on a few projects around the house.

I tend to run cold (my body temp) so I have a drawer full of sweats, yoga pants, flannel plants, ect. to pair with mismatched t-shirts that all rotate during the colder months in Seattle. In summer it's usually a tank and shorts. I don't like night gowns for sleeping in all night as they tend to ride up. I would like some more grown up pajamas though—like ones that match!

I remember my mom wearing matching sleep sets like the one above and night gowns growing up. She also always donned a silk robe. Do they even still make those?

20 second December recap: I went to a few holiday parties in Seattle in December...then went home to Cali to spend Christmas with my family!

I found the dress I'm wearing just a few hours before the party at a cute boutique store in my neighborhood. It was perfect for the conservative venue, but still young and fun I think.

On NYE at Toulouse

I was back in Seattle in time for a fun NYE party right down the street from my apartment at a spot called Toulouse Petit. I searched high and low for a NYE dress while I was home in Cali to no avail. I wound up buying this dress from Urban Outfitters at the last minute. Nothing spectacular but I liked the color.

Moving on, so I'm not big on resolutions per se, but I always like to set a few goals throughout the year.

1. My health: I don't necessarily think I'm unhealthy, but I've never taken vitamins regularly or exercised more than sporadically. I want to start running again, taking Vitamin C and a multivitamin, and ingesting probiotics diligently. Oh and how could I forget my one big food goal: eat a salad everyday!

I'm also always trying to get my skin, hair and nails in good condition — all three are a constant challenge. I'm turning the big 30 this year though and I feel like I should have a handle on these things by now!

2. Take an acting class and audition for something. I'm a huge theatre geek and loved acting in high school, but the older I got the less confident I got about my ability. Every time I see a show though I always think to myself, "That could be me!"

3. Continue to purge things from my home and life. Less stuff = more happiness. Have you seen Graham Hill's TED Talk on this? Watch it.

4. Visit my friends in Tokyo. (read: start saving like yesterday).

5. Be more introspective, starting with these.

The holidays are definitely here but I haven't been able to devote the amount of time (or money) I'd really like to on decking my halls...walls? Anywho. A string of white lights around the windows are doing the trick for now. I also have a view of the Space Needle and it's lighted rooftop tree, so I'm calling that my tree for this year!

Friday night was my work holiday party, held at this fancy, good ol' boys private club in Seattle called The Rainer Club. I found the darling little dress I'm wearing on my lunch break that afternoon at this cute boutique store in Upper Queen Anne.

I saw this Winter Bucket List over on Kristin's blog and just had to repost!

Hmm well so far I've seen a play. However I do have a secret Santa purchase to make for the work gift exchange next week, I'm going ice skating tomorrow, and at some point I'm making it down to Tacoma for Zoo Lights, so that will knock a few more things off the list! I love this time of year.

I'm also headed home for Christmas and my Mom always has our house done up for the holidays.

I have been consumed with Maiplace—also known as my new little apartment. Movers, unsuccessful mattress hunting, hauling stuff up many, many stairs. This is what I've been up to. That said, things are good.

Some best girlfriends came over last night for an unofficial housewarming of sorts (probably the only one I'll have to be honest) and rearranged all the furniture, which resulted in a laundry list of furniture recommendations to make the place complete. Mirrors, rugs, bookshelves, console tables, art. Funny how you think you are downsizing but wind up having to buy a bunch more shit. Although, my old place left much to be desired in terms of any real style, so a part of me is happy to upgrade things. However, I am really going to try and keep the fact that I want simplify my life and possessions in mind when looking for stuff the fill the space.

My latest obsessions have switched from fashion to home decor and DIY sites. Pinterest and Apartment Therapy, anyone? I've become more familiar with The Home Depot than I've ever wanted to, tackled painting half the apartment, and now I have a bunch of ideas swirling around in my head. My very handy friend L said she'd help me make a couple of console tables out of a bookshelf I'm not using. I also scored a great find on cl —two Sam Avedon Alladin Plastic Chairs for a rehab project, similar to this.

Not sure what color to paint them!

So that's what I've been up to. Getting settled. I've had a lot of changes happen this past year, mostly for the better, but change for me is always tough. I'm glad I have great friends, a loving family and I'm doing something I care about to make it all worthwhile though.

I hope everyone is off to a good week. I'm seeing Cinderella at The 5th Ave on Thursday with this lovely lady, and I have a date (a very cute date I might add) to my work holiday part on Friday. Life is good.

5 Things

The past few weeks have been a little hectic, but I thought I should pause and share a few things I'm grateful for.

1. My mom is coming to visit this weekend. She gets in Thursday night, I'm taking Friday off, and I have some fun stuff planned for us. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, getting our hair did, a play at The Rep, Kristin's housewarming party, dinner with my bestie and her mom, and showing her my new apartment!

2. Oh yeah, I moved to an apartment in Queen Anne! Well, technically, I just signed the lease and painted a couple walls (which is very hard work I might add). I have not moved anything in yet, but it's mine, and in my favorite Seattle neighborhood.

3. I'm loving my new job and soon I will be able to walk to it from my new apartment!

4. Dinner with lovely friends last night at their home.

5. Anything pumpkin.

I had the most fun at a concert last night (despite the amount of assholery that goes on in concert crowds). If you ever get a chance to see Robyn (an amazing Swedish pop singer with the soul of a ghetto black girl)—please do. She sang, danced and shook her ass for a good hour and a half and still looked amazing at the end of the show. Not to mention her awesome outfit. We managed to ~~piss off throngs of gay boys and get called names~~ make our way all the way to the front of the crowd for an unobstructed view for most of the night. Pic above from my iPhone.

A morning jaunt through my google reads revealed WhoWhatWear style stalking this doll. Further investigating (google searching) affirmed she's got much more substance than just her fab style. The girl is an absolute beauty and inspiration! Despite her tender age of 23, Bronfman, in her own words, plans on saving the world. I love seeing a girl I can immediately identify with every now again in blogging and fashion land (it's rare). She's the daughter of Edgar Bronfman (CEO of Warner Music Group) and Sherry Brewer (an African-American actress) and runs eco-clothing line and record label with brother Ben, a.k.a. M.I.A.'s baby daddy.

This post was totally ~~stolen~~ inspired by this post over on one of my favorite reads, A Cup of Jo, because I literally just did the same exact thing - only I ordered and tried mine on virtually from a site called BONLOOK and they were $99. Anyway, here are my new glasses in all of their shining, nerdy glory.

To be honest, I'm not sold on them yet. I think the frames are a little too large and long for my round face and I look a bit cartoonish. They are definitely a statement though

¡Bienvenidos, Septiembre! It feels like I've been waiting for the end of August for forever, despite it being an amazing month. I'm in no hurry to rush summer away (it basically just showed up in the PNW), but exciting things are on the horizon. Primarily, Barcelona. A part of me can't believe it's actually happening. I leave next Thursday and I can.not.wait!

The first week at my new job has also been going swimmingly. I think I'm going to really enjoy it; a nice respite from my work at the City. However, it does have one major bummer - the commute. To remedy this I've decided to move to the neighborhood where the job is located. It's a great 'hood and I would love nothing more than to be able to walk to work, the surrounding theaters, and decent restaurants. I basically live in the 'burbs now and have to bus or drive to anything remotely cool.

Fall is definitely in the air. Temps are significantly cooler at night and dew awaits me on the windshield each morning. I'm desperately in need of a wardrobe update and J. Crew has been on my mind. Can someone just gift me everything in Jenna Lyons' wardrobe? Thanks.

It's been a while, but I have a lot to be thankful for lately.

1. I'll be starting my new job on Monday! Thankful for answered prayers.

2. My awesome friends. I am very thankful to them for making me feel like a rockstar for my birthday this year. All week long people reached out to me with offers of lunches, dinners, and best of all - a floating/camping trip!

3. I am thankful I survived that camping trip. I am decidedly indoorsy, and we floated (hey, summer goal) down the lower Yamika River. The first five minutes were a little treacherous because we floated right into the trees and my back got all scratched up and some people capsized, but we survived! What doesn't kill you, right?

4. A very nice going away lunch, party and gracious present from a boss who I felt at times did not appreciate me. Haven't we all?

5. I'll be in Barcelona in two weeks!

It's been a while, friends. Lots going on and lots to report. First up, I got a new job! After five years of working at my current job, an exciting opportunity literally landed in my inbox about a month ago.

I'm pretty passionate about the arts. I stared this blog three years ago (are you my fan?). I've been on the board of The Crew at Seattle Repertory for most of that time as well. And this past year I volunteered as an Associate for an organization called ArtsFund. I landed a position on the executive side of a nonprofit arts org and I couldn't be happier. It wasn't an easier decision however; the pay is significantly less, I have to be in the office by 8:00am, and my commute is going to be about 15 extra minutes.

I'm leaving the comforts of a decent salary, nice coworkers, 20 vacation days per year, a free buss pass and plenty of other perks that come with my gig for what I think deep down is what I should really be doing: working in the arts. I start one week from Monday and my last day at my current job is this Friday.

In other good news, I'm going to BARCELONA next month and I can't hardly wait. I'm staying mum on the details for now, but if you know me at all then you should know the likelihood of a man factoring into this equation is relatively high.

What else. My birthday is this coming Monday. I'm not much for celebrating my own self, but some wonderful friends have reached out to me this year and I've got mini-celebrations happening all over the place! An awesome dinner at Revel last night with gal friends K and Lu. A lovely new friend picked up the check today at lunch. A floating and camping trip planned for this weekend with about 12 friends. A happy hour with a surprise location planned on my actual b-day, plus my boss's annual birthday lunch—I picked Seastar—coupled with a going away party for me at work (with cake!), I will have certainly been properly fêted come the actual day. I love my friends.

About that pic above, K and I ran into three, middle-aged ladies when we were leaving the Sunset Supper at The Market earlier tonight. They asked us to take their picture while donning silly poses in front of an illuminated Pike Place Market Sign, then they wanted us in the pic with them. We never got a clear answer as to why they were wearing the gowns or where the heck they were going. All they said was you shouldn't wear a wedding dress only once. I can't argue with that.

Oh yeah. I ran that thing on Saturday. Go me! I've been sore ever since! Good times. My friend Arlyn and I ran together. Official time was 2:06:34. I was hoping to come in at or under 2 hrs. but I really just wanted to finish it without stopping. We did for the most part, only stopping when necessary at the water and drink stations. We also had to bob and weave around a lot of slow people. Next race we decided we will start in a faster corral - I have no doubt we could finish in under 2hrs. then!

If a man tells you how cute you are in 72font, gives you a little seashell necklace he made for you (you read that right, made) for your impending trip to Hawaii, then tells you he can't wait to see you tomorrow - you DO (I repeat, do) stay up past midnight making him his favorite flavor of cupcakes for his birthday today.

Perfect Lemon Cupcakes

Cake:
1 package lemon cake mix
1 cup sour cream
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup oil
4 eggs
1 small package lemon instant pudding

Mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients. Mix with electric mixer on medium speed for about two minutes. Use a strong mixer, this batter is thick. For cupcakes, bake them at 350 degrees for 20 minutes (I was able to get 24 very full cupcakes from the recipe). For regular cake, pour into a greased 9x11 pan or two round pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Don't over bake or the cake will be too dry! The toothpick test works to check to see if they're done.
The original recipe said that the cupcakes will fall after they come out of the oven, but this is normal and to just fill up the indentation with more frosting. I didn't have this problem at all!

Lemon Buttercream Frosting:
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, very soft
6-8 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of sugar, then the juice and the zest. Beat until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, until icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency (I added 6 cups total). Use and store at room temperature. (Don't refrigerate and it will last in a covered container for about three days.)

Three more sleeps and I'll be headed to the Aloha state. I went on a little shopping trip this weekend to prepare. On the need list: swimsuit and sandals. On the bought list: two pairs of sandals and a pair of denim Bermuda shorts from American Eagle - AE has some really cute and affordable leather sandals right now. I was surprised. I also got two summer dresses from Billabong and a cheap but cute pair of sunglasses from H&M. I had no luck on the swimsuit front but decided I can always look for one there - I would imagine Hawaii's got a swimsuit shop or 10! The summer gear will need to be pulled out again for the 4th of July when I visit one of my besties in Hermosa Beach. Can.not.wait.

Weekend

The weekend seemed jam packed. I can't believe I did everything I set out to do, including a 10 mile run on Sunday. I will not lie though, I am crazy sore today and I feel about 90 yrs. old. Apparently taking an ice bath post-run would have helped alleviate some of the soreness, but I just read about that remedy today on the good ol' internets. I'm still going to try a version of it tonight while wearing a sweatshirt, shorts and socks in the tub.

Friday night was SAM Remix, the quarterly party at Seattle Art Museum. It's always fun to go with a group of friends or a date, and this time we did arts and crafts.

Saturday I had brunch with some friends and we got to meet our friend Anne's newest little one, Dylan Patrick. Too cute!

That afternoon I went on a date to Lincoln Park with Ralph. We sunbathed, ate pistachios and drank Talking Rain. The weather was perfect (finally). That evening I found myself at Barrio with Karen for a little dinner and drinks, then we went over to Chop Suey to see one of my favorite local bands perform: THEESatisfaction. I have a major girl crush on them.

Sunday was the 10 mile run day. I didn't set out at 7am like I'd planned, but by 11am I was off for a run in the 65 degree Seattle weather. I found I needed one full water bottle of water and a quick bathroom break around mile 6. I also learned your body does weird things you sometimes can't control! I didn't do much post-run except laze around on the couch. Eventually I ordered a pizza (as I do most Sunday nights) and watched a movie called Love and Other Drugs.

Some friends and I went to the Hama Hama Oyster Farm opening day on Saturday. We (mostly they) foraged for oysters and dug for clams. By day's end, I'd only procured about 5 clams total and ate one raw oyster (yuck). It was a fun little adventure though.

Happy Monday, lovelies. 5 things to be thankful for.

1. Catching up with my beautiful friend Kristin last week for happy hour and a play (which I still need to review)!

2. My friend Brandon's totally awesome, all-white 80s themed 30th birthday party (with an open bar) on Friday night; even though I paid for it all day on Saturday. Aryln and I in our white.

3. My very good childhood friend, Ira, and his wife, Mai, had their baby on Sunday. They live in Japan, but I hope to visit them soon and meet the baby. They named her Sierra. He sent me a couple pics from his iPad - she's too cute.

4. Arlyn and I ran an 8K race called Beat the Bridge on Sunday morning in the pouring down Seattle rain. I really did not want to go - but I also did not want to let my friend down who was already at Husky Stadium ready to run! We ran it in 44:27 with an average pace of 8:57. We're both training for the 1/2 in June so it was a good little race to get our feet wet; literally!

5. I've been feeling better this week about everything that's happened over the past few months. Time to let old wounds heal.

Here is a (not very good) pic of my friend Ann and me from that Nautical Themed party I mentioned the other week. I went with a simple striped mini dress, red belt, white wedges and sparkly anchor earrings (though sadly you can't see them in this pic).

I also tried the Sally Hansen Nail Strips again - I know, I know - but they were sparkly and looked fun. They are still peeling off today, but they are an acceptable thing to do for a special occasion I've decided.

Running Update

I am running 7 miles tomorrow. It will be the farthest I've ever run in one stretch in my entire life. Sounds crazy, but it's true. I was never much of a long distance runner.

Some things I've been thinking about since embarking on this journey. I registered for the race on February 28th, just a little over two months ago. Since then I've worked my way up to six miles from zero, running on average about 2-3 times a week. There are weeks I wanted to run more, but the weather wasn't cooperating or social stuff got in the way. My pace is still pretty slow, about a 10 minute mile, but I've mainly been focusing on building up the mileage. I figure I'll try to go a litter faster once I reach the 10 mile run. My goal is to run three times a week going forward.

One area I've yet to focus on much is the cross/strength training aspect of the training guide I've been using. I should be building upper body strength and varying my exercises; must get to the pool and lift some weights ASAP. I have tried to incorporate more stretching however since I was having a lot of calf pain earlier on in the program.

That said, I'm feeling pretty good. If I can get up to 10 miles by the end of the month I think I'll feel adequately prepared for the race on June 25th.

I've been running with my Nike + iPod contraption and it records the runs.

From a fashion standpoint, good socks that keep your feet dry and underwear that don't ride up are essential. You want to be as comfortable as possible when running. The littlest things can distract you when you're using "mind over matter" out there, so I am constantly thinking of things that will make it easier to focus on the task at hand and not on holding gadgets, pulling shorts down, ect.

This cute recap of a half marathon is all the more inspiring.

Product Review: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

Not in love.

I seldom polish my nails other than with some clear Nutra Nail, but after reading all the rave reviews online for Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips I decided to shell out the $9 for them at Target. The prospect of not having to wait for the polish to dry and it supposedly lasting up to 10 days sold me. I chose a color called Raise a Glass which turned out to be a shimmery gold.

First thing to note, the application of these things take time. If you don't have at least 30 minutes, don't start. I kind of rushed my left hand and it did not look as good as the right. However, I also think this is just like painting your nails - one hand always looks better than the other if you are doing them yourself. Second thing, the strips don't exactly fit the nail. You can file them around the edge and trim the sides with the cuticle stick, but some just wound up kinda off. Third, as of this morning they started to lift, which led me to start peeling and picking them off. Do not do this! I can already see the damage to my nails from essentially pulling stickers off of them. The proper way to remove them is supposed to be with nail polish remover; I will try this method to get the remnants off tonight.

I applied the nail strips Friday night and as of Monday come noon, they are 75% off. I will not be buying these again. If you have the time and patience, just paint your nails the good old fashioned way. A $9 bottle of polish will get you a lot more wear!

Why not make some?

1. Run more. My 1/2 marathon training is going, but it's not as going as I'd like it to be. The weather is somewhat to blame. I just can't bring myself to run in the rain after work, but I might have to bite the bullet soon. My goal is to run 10 miles comfortably by the end of the month. The 1/2 is on June 25th.

2. Read some everyday. I stayed up half the night on Saturday finishing Olive Kitteridge for book club on Sunday. If I read some everyday, even just for 20 minutes, I could get more shut eye. Which brings me to goal #3.

3. Get more shut eye. Self explanatory. zzzzzzzzzzzz

4. Buy a new laptop. I tend to put off expensive electronic purchases until, well, forever. I still have not purchased a new T.V. my parents gave me the money to buy for Christmas two years ago.

5. Write more. My other blog has been lacking these days.

A Royal Affair

I'm not even going to lie, I was up until the wee hours of the morning watching Kate Middleton become Princess Catherine. Well, technically I didn't see her become a princess (I dozed off right after she met Prince William at the altar) but I must admit I had butterflies waiting for the first glimpse of her and the dress when she got into the car heading to Westminster Abbey; loved it and thought she looked stunning. I hope to catch the entire, elaborate affair at some point this weekend as I'm sure it will be replaying nonstop. Congrats Will and Kate. I hope they have a long and happy marriage.

Fine by me. Stripes are in, deck shoes are in and everybody wants to look like they're going on a boat apparently. This will require a shopping trip, however, I'm not complaining about that either. I like both of the options flanking this paragraph and I'm picturing either of them paired with a thin red belt and cute wedges. In the past year or so I've become quite fond of Jeff Bridges as an actor. I think it started with the movie Crazy Heart (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as "Bad Blake"). I loved that movie; see it if you haven't. Although he is probably best known for his role as "The Dude" in The Big Lebowski - a movie I've watched a few times and tried to love, but ultimately did not.

Long story short, I bought tickets today to see him perform songs from Crazy Heart with his band in a concert this summer. I've been a fan of country music (believe it or not) since high school, so I am really excited to see him perform!

Is it spring yet? Oh wait, I temporarily forgot I lived here. Today I'm wearing a sweater, wool skirt, tights and riding boots.

However, when temps above 60 finally decide to grace Seattle with their presence, I'm thinking I need a go-to look for spring work wear. Afraid to say my work clothes have become some odd mix of biz cas with just cas. I don't feel professional or very put together most days and I'm definitely not clad for hopping over to that high-powered happy hour after work. I think I've become too Seattle. I'm also not sure if I'm really dressing age appropriately - a bit juvenile for the workplace perhaps.

So I've decided I want to make a conscious effort to step my game up. The look that's been on my mind lately is a dress paired with a cute blazer and heels. To make it not too stuffy (this is still Seattle) I'd pair a more fun or casual dress with the blazer and perhaps wedges or flats instead of the basic heel. Now I just need a windfall.

In perpetual search of the perfect Trench Coat

This is an old pic of me and some girlfriends in their colorful trenches about to see SATC.
(Pretty sure I borrowed the one I'm wearing from another friend).

Ah the proverbial, style classic: a trench coat. Stylish, timeless, sophisticated; can instantly dress-up a casual ensemble. Alas, most trench coats don't look good on me. I've been searching for one for years and trying them on, only to wind up looking like Inspector Gadget or a 50-something professional. I've tried Banana, J. Crew, Old Navy, Nordstrom, Macy's - even bought and returned a few. Then several months ago I found one at the Goodwill that happened to work! Plus it was only $12. Banana Republic and very simple - I think it came from an outlet store. No shoulder epaulets (my shoulders are broad enough), the right length (not too long) and no wing flap on the upper back or whatever that thing is; just a simple, very basic trench. I used to work at BR so I looked at the tag and saw the label denotes it was from Spring '03. Darn. So basically no chance I'll ever come across a newer version of it. If I could get a new one exactly like it, that would be ideal. In the meantime, I'll keep looking. My Goodwill find is a bit worn out.

Time to be thankful.

Last week was very trying. Technically, the past month and a half has been (see here), but I am trying to keep my spirits up.

1. For the new iPhone I got on Tuesday. I accidentally dropped my newish (just got it in December) 3GS in the toilet back at the Superbowl Sunday party and have been using my old, worthless 3G ever since; it is sooooo slow and had a cracked screen being held on by packing tape. I went to the Apple Store at Southcenter the other night, full of anxiety about having to drop a couple hundred bucks on a new one, but thankfully a very nice lady gladly replaced my 3GS for free. I am a new woman! I immedialty went home and uploaded about 30 podcasts. Thank you nice Apple Store lady! I later gave her praise in an email survey they sent me. She deserves a raise.

2. Technically this happened last week, but I took Thursday and Friday off and did two things I've been wanting to do for a long time. Pesos happy hour breakfast and a day at Banya 5. I highly reccomend doing both on a weekday sometime.

3. An annoying problem is annoying no more. I'll spare you the details, but YAY!

4. Drinking beer, wine and scotch with my friend Karen tonight at this. Praise be.

5. Taking a weekend jaunt up to Bellingham tomorrow with my friend Alison. Her parents have a lovely house right on Lake Whatcom. Peaceful.

Funny to think I started this (albeit, sporadically updated) little blog just over a year ago. How time flies. This time last year I was in SF two weekends in a row; including the Superbowl and Valentine's Day (visiting a guy I dated very briefly). I remember trying to figure out what to pack on those trips. I think I just wore a LDB last V-day and called it good. This year I didn't worry too much about my Superbowl wears (get it) but I guess my choice of kelly green top made me a default Packers fan. Whatevs, they won. Truth be told, I mainly spent the game eating way too much food and drinking way too much beer. I'm paying for it today.

This weekend the bf and I are headed to Victoria, B.C. to celebrate Christmas. Well technically it's my Christmas gift from him (awww). I've already started to think about outfits because this week is slammed and we are leaving bright and early Saturday morning. I figure I'll need three outfits total: one to wear over on the ferry and during the day, something cuter for going out that night, and another day-time outfit for Sunday since we will be there until 5p.m. Their weather is like ours, so rain and cooler temps are on the agenda.

Monday night we are going to Intiman's Valentine's Cabaret. I'm so freaking excited! It was my idea because I love love love Daniel Breaker, but the boy is responsible for dinner plans. I'm thinking I'll wear a red dress this year. According to Cosmo (I know), men like the color red on women. I never wear red but I suppose Valentine's Day is a fine time to start.

It's fun to look back over the past year and see the way things turned out. If you're reading this babe, I'm really happy I met you! Happy Valentine's Day.

They fall right at my ankle; longer than what is pictured above. They almost remind me of little cigarette pants a la Audrey Hepburn. Very cute, flattering and comfortable. Is the question plaguing me at the moment. With temps in the 30s coupled with rain and snow, I'm preparing for the worst, and to be FREEZING. Or rather trying to prepare to not be freezing. I hate being cold. HATE. Why am I going to Germany and Paris in December again? Ok I'll stop complaining. Yuppie problems, really. That said, I don't want to go into debt for naught on this trip by being cold and miserable the entire time. I also don't want to resemble a walking snowman. So, I ask, what is a girl supposed to wear in winter in Paris?

I took to the internets. The HiP Paris blog has been amazing with their recent winter wear post. Not sure I can totally get behind those fashions, but it's interesting to see what the Parisiennes are wearing. Fur, wool, and funny low-heeled boots.

I was inspired by Black Swan for Halloween this year. I found a feather wreath at a party shop to make a tutu and added some boas and additional plumage to get the full look. I also added feathers to my eyes along with black and white stage makeup. I really loved the look! I can't wait to see Black Swan the movie this December. How was your Halloween? I was a bit frazzled this past week and weekend to say the least. Add a side of annoyed to that as well. Loose plans to attend a local music festival on Saturday night were vetoed in lieu of an impromptu pumpkin carving party at my friend Dan's house. Unfortunately come fiesta time my annoyance had turned into full on upset (oh, boys) and a bad attitude followed me to the party. A friend noticing my bummed outttedness offered up her extra pumpkin for me to carve (I didn't have my own because originally I was going to the music festival, but I digress) but I was not feeling very inspired, until....

...this little gem came to mind! Angry much? haha

Well, I'm happy to say by the end of the weekend, misunderstandings became understandings, F-ck Yous were no more, and I made this delicious baby, mmmm mmmm good.

Whole Wheat Pumpkin Bread Recipe

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup organic turbinado sugar (or white sugar)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup pumpkin purée
1/2 cup olive oil
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/8 tsp ginger

1 Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda.

2 Mix the pumpkin, oil, eggs, 1/4 cup of water, and spices together, then combine with the dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly.

3 Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out of the pan and let cool on a rack.

Makes one loaf. Can easily double the recipe.

This morning while getting ready for work, the boy said he'd never seen me wear pants. Note: I do wear pants, just not very often. I aspire to wear solely skirts and dresses someday, although I do like the occasional skinny jean. Anyway, I put on a pair of dark grey trouser jeans from Banana to wear to work today. They look more like pants than jeans though.

I love this causal fall look. I'd probably pair it with of a pair of oxfords though, perhaps these.

Vanity Sizing has gotten way out of hand!

Last night at the mall in an attempt for an Apple genius to diagnose my iPhone FAIL after the last update made it run like oxen up a hill, I wandered around for a bit while waiting for my appointment. Not looking for anything in particular, I was lured into the GAP for some reason. Maybe their new ads for the skinniest jeans ever or something like that. Not that I'm even a fan of skinny jeans at the mo, but I digress.

They were having an additional 40% off all sale stuff so I looked through the sparse racks to find a cute pair of white jean shorts, labeled size 2/26. I'm usually a 2 at the GAP so I suspected they would fit. To my dismay and almost disbelief in the fitting room, they were HUGE! Why GAP, why? I know my natural waist is larger than 26 inches and a size 2 should not be big on me. I am 5'4" and about 123lbs on a good day. I consider myself an average sized young woman. I should not fit into a size zero. I'm sure some women would love to be my size but I have friends much smaller than me and I have to wonder, if I need the zero, what sizes are they buying? Baby GAP? Realistically I should be a size 6. I'm sure if my Grandma was my size in say 1980, she would have been a 6. Not a zero. It's an evil marketing scheme and it's probably keeping some people fat. I mean you can parade around thinking you're a size zero as an average sized woman, what is that saying?

I was also at Ann Taylor Loft the other day in search of a dress to wear to a wedding. I found a suitable one in a size 2 Petite that was you guessed it, TOO BIG. I noticed they carried the size 00. What the heck is a double zero. Invisible?

Spring has sorta sprung here in Seattle but it's still cold, rainy and wet and has been for the past, oh, too many frikin' days. That said, I've been inspired by some spring-like threads and upcoming festivies I'll want to look pretty for.

I was admittedly inspired to do this post after reading Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP Spring Fashion newsletter.

The first item for spring Gwynnie endorses is military inspired items. I haven't fully gotten behind this trend but it seems to be all the rage. Next up is graphic prints. Now those I can get behind. Third is a solid color dress. Yes! Then florals. Again, yes. And finally a LWD. Now I'll actually have a specific need for one of these babies next month as I'm attending a "White Party" where wearing all white is required, not the people.

I mainly like this outfit for the tights and shoes. I have a pair of peep-toe booties I never wear because I think they look funny with my toes hanging out, but pairing them bright tights like in the above ensemble is incredibly appealing to me. I think I shall try out the look this weekend with a pair of bright blue Hue tights. Credit.

I have a pair of hot pink tights that came with a pair of black ones I bought in a tights emergency, but I never really intended to wear the pink ones. That is, until I saw the above outfit today. It's pretty much perfect. Credit.

I am loving this look. Rock your wedges in the winter? Here in Seattle we're having a very spring-like winter. The highs have been in the mid 50s and it's relatively sunny. I think this look works because the wedges are a darker color so there isn't a stark contrast with the black socks. I will have to go home and survey my wedges. A new pair for the spring might be in order! I imagine a lighter colored pair would work well with lighter colored socks. Either way, I want to try this look. A great weekend option. Credit.

I've been jet-setting the past two weekends to my favorite city in the world, San Francisco!

I was visiting a very cute boy (who I've since learned does not care much about fashion, although I find him to be well dressed and would describe his style as simple and neat -as in tidy) so imagine my fretting about perfect outfits for each second of the trip while having to fit them all in a carry-on. Weekend one was ok as I just had to pack for two days and an outfit to wear straight to work from the plane, but the second trip was Fri night through Tuesday afternoon and I had to include outfits for day, night, Valentine's night dinner and one outfit for a surprise where I was told it just had to be something I wouldn't mind getting dirty. What the heck! I'd been scouring my favorite blogs the weeks prior and compiling my favorite looks. Then I tried to incorporate them with stuff I already owned and a few little shopping trips to Forever 21, H&M, Marshall's and Urban Outfitters. I'm not really a fashion blogging photo taking gal, so I don't have any great photos like the gals on the blogs I frequent, but I did find one suitable to post of an outfit that was inspired by this one.

I call it "risky business" as I'm clearly wearing no pants! That was our joke for the day. I think the boy actually labeled it risky business first. I felt really cute in this outfit and it was comfy! I'm really over pants.

DIY scarf tying how- to's

The Belted Scarf
I'm not huge on belting scarves, but if I were, I would belt a lightweight square scarf like this, making sure the ends are fluffed out enough not to look meagre, and belting high on my natural waist. Credit.

The Warmest Way
Take Elaine's knot (third photo down) and tuck the knot under the loop, wrapping closely around your neck. I swear this is the warmest way to tie a scarf (even warmer than the Orchid Grey wrap because it leaves no part of your decolletage exposed to winter air), and it fits well under the collar of a coat. Figuring out this technique saved my neck from frostbite the year I moved to the midwest. Credit.

Saw this post on WishWishWish and it introduced me to something I've never thought of in the way they are shown here: collars. I think they would be fun to spice up a plain t or simple dress. I will be on the lookout for one or maybe attempt to make my own. I found a couple tutorials if you're DIY inclined.

I've always thought my lips were too big to accentuate them even further with red lipstick. The only time in recent memory I can remember trying the look was for Halloween a few years ago, but seeing a high school friend of mine via her blog rock the look has totally inspired me. We have similar skin tones and it looks amazing on her. She's such a beauty though. Anyway, I've read NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella is the way to go. I will have to head to Sephora and test it out.

She just keeps getting prettier. I think her appeal to me stems from my being able to identify with her look. A somewhat unconventional, brown-skinned Hollywood beauty. In her words, "Look at me.
